Our history

How it all began

Hotel Birger Jarl was built in 1974 in central Stockholm's Golden Triangle, surrounded by Stureplan, Jarlaplan and Odenplan. At the time, the hotel was seventies personified. But as we all know, trends don't live forever and in 1999 the prestigious building underwent a complete renovation, giving it a whole new personality. The entrance, lobby, restaurant, veranda, gym overlooking the Stockholm rooftops, superior rooms and bathrooms were all renovated from floor to ceiling. Birger Jarl was given a new identity as a design hotel with perhaps Stockholm's most unique design rooms and suites, mainly on the 7th floor, created by leading Swedish architects.

Hotel Birger Jarl was transformed into a modern four-star design hotel in Stockholm. Young interior designers and well-known designers worked together to create several of the rooms that offer surprising and individual design features. The other rooms also showcase Swedish interiors and Scandinavian design. Exhibitions on the theme of Swedish colour, form and design were often held in the lobby.

Further development of the hotel

In 2011, it was time once again to further develop the hotel. The entire first floor, including the lobby, dining room, bar, kitchen and veranda, was given a completely new look. The hotel was expanded with an additional 36 rooms, suites and studios, giving us a total of 271 hotel rooms. A brand new conference floor with capacity for up to 550 people was opened in 2012.
